Forex (foreign exchange) is the market where one country's currency is exchanged for another's. Prices are always quoted in pairs; for example, EUR/USD tells you how many US Dollars it takes to buy 1 Euro.
XAUUSD is the price of gold (XAU = one troy ounce of gold) in US Dollars. Although it is not a currency, gold is traded with the same mechanics as a forex pair and is very popular because it moves actively.
Why the price of gold moves
- The value of the US Dollar. Gold is priced in USD, so when the Dollar weakens, gold tends to rise, and vice versa.
- Interest rates & inflation expectations. Gold pays no interest, so high interest rates make it less attractive.
- Global uncertainty / risk. When markets are anxious, some money moves into assets seen as safe, including gold.
Key points
- Prices always come in pairs: the first instrument is what is "bought/sold", the second is the unit of measurement.
- XAUUSD = the price of 1 ounce of gold in US Dollars.
- Understanding "why price moves" matters more than memorizing numbers.
